In This Significant Hour
  By Lois J. Stucky

How timely it is that Henry Blackaby in his message in this issue draws our attention to the significant hour in Gethsemane when Jesus, in great heaviness of heart, took three of His disciples farther than the others that they might bear with Him, as much as they could, something of the burden on His heart. Hanging in the balance as our Savior labored alone in prayer was the eternal salvation of mankind. The fact that the disciples fell asleep while Christ agonized in prayer over something of such unspeakable importance, emphatically alerts us to heed His exhortation to "Watch and pray!" (Matt. 26:41). That hour was ushering in the era of the glorious New Covenant. We could very well be living in the days when it will climax with Christís return. The perilous times we live in foreshadow this (2 Tim. 3:1-5). We see the anti-Christ spirit gathering strength (1 John 2:18). We hear scoffers ridicule accountability to God (2 Pet. 3:3-4).

Surely this is a significant hour in which the need to be awake and alert is intense! Jesus solemnly warns that the "cares and riches and pleasures of this life" can choke out heavenly things and rob us of spiritual fruitfulness (Luke 8:14).

Along with serious warnings, God gives great promises concerning the latter days. I briefly call attention to two of His promises in particular. In Acts 2:17 and 21 we read: "And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all fleshÖ. And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." These promises were first given through the prophet Joel (2:28,32), and were preached by Peter to the multitude on the Day of Pentecost to explain the wonders that had taken place. These promises burned in the hearts of Brother and Sister W. C. Moore as God led them to begin publishing Herald of His Coming. These promises motivate the ministry to this day.

In Matthew 24:14 we read: "This Gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come." Such promises as this inspired the motto, "World evangelization through world revival." This expresses the thrust of Herald of His Coming ministry. How else can earthís multitudes be reached, how can a harvest be gathered from among them, except God come upon the preaching of His Word by the power of the Holy Spirit? God pouring out of His Spirit in great convicting power is His appointed means, and souls repenting and being saved by His glorious grace is His goal. To this Herald of His Coming gives itself.

The local friends, who come in each month to package Herald papers to send across this nation and to distant places of the world, express again and again how meaningful they find it to do the routine work of inserting Herald papers in envelopes. Seeing the addresses on the envelopes gives them the joy of knowing they are helping to send the Word of God to ones they could never reach in person. The friends who send their donations to pay for the postage to ship them share likewise in this privilege. And all who pray for the power of the Holy Spirit upon the Word to make it work effectively in the hearts of readers play an indispensable part in the ministry also.

It is grand that we can work together with one another and with God in helping to spread His Word, "a priceless treasure of eternal value," as a reader in Africa describes it. Another in Africa expresses great gratitude that readers there can receive it "absolutely free so that the less privileged in society can also read it." God put it on the hearts of the founders of Herald of His Coming, Brother and Sister Moore, to send the Herald free of charge that no one be denied the Gospel because they could not pay for it. It is an increasing challenge to send it free of charge, but it is the only way many will receive it. Will you please help in prayer and with finances as God enables you? God loves a cheerful giver, whether that is a giver of prayer or labor or finances. Might we all find joy in pooling our efforts for the sake of our wonderful and worthy God and His glorious purposes for all the world!

    Praise God with Us

    * For all with a heart of love to God and souls who join in spreading His Word of salvation and revival as far and wide as possible, now, while the door of mercy is still open! Thank God for the warmhearted response to the Heraldís need for additional finances to meet the great increase in postage costs.

    Please Pray with Us

    * That in this significant, late hour, we will respond to Godís awakening call to "Watch and pray" and be fitted by the Holy Spirit to give wholehearted effort to the work of His kingdom. Ask God to greatly use this issue to that end.

    * That God will touch hearts to continue to supply the increased resources we must have to maintain present mailings and for wisdom to make any adjustments that become necessary.

    * That we, Godís people, who are privileged to hold in our hands the glorious Gospel of Christ, will accept our accountability to share it zealously throughout the whole world. God is not willing that any should perish! (2 Pet. 3:9).
