Watchful In Prayer
  By Lois J. Stucky

Has there ever in history been a prayer movement like the Global Day of Prayer? Has there ever been an endeavor to unite believers worldwide to focus on repentance and on petitioning God for an outpouring of His Holy Spirit? While it is hoped that several hundred million believers will be praying at their respective locations, they will be a small minority compared to the world population of over six billion souls. But like the famed missionary, William Carey, we can "Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God." Were not the 120 gathered to pray together for ten days in the Upper Room in Jerusalem far outnumbered? But oh, the mighty blessing God was pleased to pour out on that Day of Pentecost because of the petitions of that praying minority who obediently tarried in Jerusalem as Jesus had commanded!

God loves the world and gave His Son to be the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2). God entreats all believers who will to take part in helping to fulfill His purpose that when all the saints of the ages are gathered to His home above, there shall be included those of every "kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation" (Rev. 5:9). And His call for laborers seems to intensify in this late hour of history.

The first petition on the first of the ten days of continuous prayer leading up to the Global Day is: "For the hearts of Godís people to blaze with love and loyal obedience to Jesus as King and Lord of all." Is not this the secret of heartfelt participation in praying not only for a short time, but praying day-by-day throughout all the remaining days of our life? It is Godís love for the world blazing in our hearts that draws us to prayer. When our hearts seem lukewarm, we ought to seek to receive a fresh infilling of the love of God. And ever we ought to seek, by His abounding grace, to live the holy lives that receive answers to prayer.

Jesus commanded His disciples at a most crucial moment to "Watch and pray!" (Matt. 26:41). Watch against any sin by which Satan would attempt to waylay us. Seek Godís enabling to live constantly in a spirit of prayer. It is by Godís grace alone that we will be enabled to take our place as a faithful prayer-worker in Godís harvest field. It is by this same grace that we will be prepared for the glorious day of the return of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of the harvest! "Of that day and that hour knoweth no manÖ. Watch and pray: for you know not when the time isÖ. I say unto all, Watch" (Mark 13:32, 33, 37).

Please Pray Ė

    * That many Jewish people will put their trust in the atoning Blood of Jesus Christ. Pray for more opportunities to send out Hear, O Israel, the Jewish salvation herald available at Herald of His Coming.

    * For good participation of Herald readers in the Global Day of Prayer and the ten days of prayer preceding it.

    * For the anointing of the Holy Spirit on the messages in this issue, and that hearts of readers will be made to hunger and thirst more keenly for a divine visitation from on high and be enabled to pray faithfully for that.

    * For Godís supply of funds to maintain the mailing out of the blessed messages He supplies to purify and stir His people to faithful service and prayer.
