Our Calling And
By Lois J. Stucky
"This generation of Christians is writing the final chapter of the Church’s history here on earth." My attention was arrested by the foregoing statement which I read recently. I am not repeating this statement as my positive declaration, for it is not given us to know beforehand which will be the final generation when Christ returns. But what struck me was the undeniable fact that this generation of Christians is writing a chapter in the "History of the Church through the Ages." What will it be when our chapter is opened for all of the ages to see? Will our generation have the joy of hearing, "Well done, good and faithful servants"? Or will we be ashamed, or perhaps even appalled that we failed to live up to our calling and opportunities? Am I personally living up to my calling and my opportunities, I asked myself as I thought upon this.
How blessed it would be if this generation could write a revival chapter--a chapter of the power and presence of God being poured out in greatest measure--preparing a Church "without spot or wrinkle or any such thing!"--a Church worthy to meet the Heavenly Bridegroom, a Church that has gathered a vast harvest of souls into the Heavenly Kingdom!
Ephesians 5:25-27 says, "...Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish."
This was not just the Apostle Paul’s fond hope, but it tells what is the Father’s good pleasure. This will not happen automatically or through wishful thinking. It will take great sanctifying workings of the Holy Spirit. It will take diligent walking in the light of God’s Word. It will take Spirit-filled living and witnessing. It will take "enormous tides of prayer" as the item on page six tells.
Although we may not be the final generation before Jesus comes, we are surely a generation with a high and holy calling and with remarkable opportunities. Think of the generation that was living when Jesus Christ came down to earth from Heaven. The very Son of God was in their midst! The Creator of the earth walked among them! The one who existed before there was time opened His heart to them, and invited them to come to Him and receive Eternal Life! Yet many were rebellious and unbelieving; they turned back and followed not after Him. How could they be so blind, we question. How could they make so foolish, so tragic a mistake? They did not know nor honor the hour of their visitation (Luke 19:44), and they broke the heart and drew the strong crying of the divine Visitor among them because of it.
Christians, let not us of this generation overlook the significance of our hour. It is an hour of opportunity for the greatest move of God the world has ever seen. True, there are evils and terrorism and perils abounding and increasing the world around. But in spite of it all, the Gospel is speeding into all the world as never in the past, using many means of modern technology to hasten the process along. As mentioned in a short item on page 11, statistics issued by the JESUS film of Campus Crusade For Christ, tell that the story of Jesus has been shown in all 236 countries and territories listed by the United Nations. Gospel Recordings organization is recording and reproducing Gospel message tapes in many languages, including what they call the "Tailenders"--people groups with numbers much smaller than other groups and hence bypassed thus far in outreach with the Gospel. This year alone their goal is to record in 300 new languages, most of which have never heard the name of Jesus! Scriptures have been translated and printed in languages that 97% of the world’s population speak (although hardly half that number can read them).
Tract companies are printing and sending out millions of tracts, shipping them by large containers to countries around the world. Christian radio and TV are continually presenting broadcasts in additional languages, reaching into places which are largely inaccessible by other means. Anointed preachers stand before crowds of tens and hundreds of thousands to proclaim the Gospel message. Then there is the devoted army of individual missionaries whose lives and lips tell forth the Gospel often at great sacrifice and risk.
Behind all of this is more than human ingenuity. Oh, the wonderworking Heart and Hand of God! How can we but bow in adoration and praise before Him, thankful for His love for ALL THE WORLD and for the numbers of souls He is calling into His Kingdom in this hour. God has much in place! His plan is progressing. What we must plead for is that Heaven’s flame will descend in power and set all this noble effort that He has inspired afire with His presence and power! Revival in the Church will enhance her labors and send forth more laborers to reap most plentifully, most abundantly, even copiously and in overflowing measure! God is not willing that any should perish. We cannot expect too largely!
Oh, what an hour of opportunity! Dr. Duewel’s exhortation on page six is most appropriate: "Why Are You Sleeping? Get Up And Pray!" Dr. Duewel’s recent letter to his supporters was appropriately closed above his signature with the words, "All for Jesus." It indicates a heart full of love to the Lord, a life lived unto and for Him alone. God’s eyes run to and fro throughout the world to show Himself "strong" on behalf of such (2 Chron. 16:9).
God will bless to the fullness of our measure of faith and obedience. How we need to be people of faith and obedience! "All for Jesus!" But remember, as Sammy Tippit warns in the front-page article, we can become so busy working for God that we do not have time for God Himself. We lose the tenderhearted first love for our Lord. To the church at Ephesus, guilty of this very thing, Jesus gave His solemn word: "Repent!" (Rev. 2:5). Return to the first love from which you have fallen.
The church at Pergamos, bravely facing even martyrdom, allowed error to flourish in their midst. Jesus repeated His solemn word: "Repent!" (Rev. 2:16). Return to purity of the Gospel message.
The church at Thyatira was very zealous in their service to God, but they allowed immorality in their midst. Again came solemn warning from the Head of the Church to repent (Rev. 2:21,22). Return to holy living.
The church at Sardis had many works to her credit, but the life and heart in the church was dying or already dead. "Repent!" was Jesus’ awakening message to them (Rev. 3:3). Return and become alive in Jesus Christ.
The church at Laodicea also had commendable works but they were lukewarm. "Repent!" speaks forth Jesus (Rev. 3:19). Return to the "hot" glowing life you once lived.
Repent! Return! It will lead to the revival we urgently need to become the glorious Church without spot or wrinkle, washed in the Blood of the Lamb and gathering in a great harvest for the glory of God and ready and eager to meet her Beloved!
Join with Us at Herald of His Coming
If there is yet something you feel the Lord would have you do to fulfill your part in today’s opportunities, we encourage you to join with us at Herald of His Coming. The calling of this ministry through the years has been "world evangelization through world revival." In addition to sending out a limited amount of Salvation literature, we send out the revival-oriented Herald of His Coming paper and other revival literature to readers in about 150 countries of the world. The testimonies on page 12 speak for themselves as to how readers are helped in praying and believing for revival and in preaching and teaching of it to others. The more prayer that can be generated, the sooner revival is likely to come.
To maintain our current output of literature, we need additional giving. Expenses continue to rise at a time when giving has slacked off. Please look to God with us for means to avoid cutting back, and please help if you can. Thank you so much.
* For you praying friends to whom we have had the privilege of mailing the Daily Prayer Guide for Herald of His Coming, and for the substantial support your prayers give to the ministry.
* That Christine Ludlow is tolerating the treatments well and is at her desk daily.
* For anointing on this issue of Herald of His Coming, and that God will lay on more of us, His people, a burden of prayer for revival. Pray we will faithfully carry it, by His grace.
* For increased inflow of funds to Herald of His Coming. Pray God’s people will have wisdom to practice good stewardship, so God’s work everywhere can go forward. The postal increase coming soon will affect Herald of His Coming along with other Christian ministries.
