Our Lordís Patience Means Salvation
 By Rich Carmicheal

In the third chapter of his second letter, the Apostle Peter focuses on the return of the Lord. He acknowledges that some people will scoff at the idea of a second coming (3:3-4) and that some people will consider the Lord to be slow in keeping His promise to return (3:8-9). Nevertheless, Peter emphasizes the certainty and suddenness of the Lordís return. He writes that "the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare" (3:10). He warns that the Day will be a day of judgment and destruction for the ungodly (3:7). However, the godly can "look forward to the day of God and speed its comingÖlooking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness" (3:12-13).

In light of these truths, Peter stresses the need to be prepared. He exhorts us "to live holy and godly lives" (3:11), to "make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with Him" (3:14) and to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" (3:18).

He also emphasizes that it is the Lordís desire that everyone be prepared for His return. He writes that "the Lord Öis patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance" (3:9). He adds, "...our Lordís patience means salvation" (3:15).

Dear friend, you and I have the opportunity now to benefit from the Lordís patience. The Lord has given us time to turn to Him in holiness and to "make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with Him." He has given us time to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." He has also given us time to help others do these same things.

I sincerely hope that Herald of His Coming is providing much spiritual encouragement to you as you anticipate the Lordís return. If so, I want to invite you to help this ministry provide spiritual encouragement to others as well. As you may know, Herald materials are sent worldwide and free-of-charge so that no one might be denied access to the Gospel. This is possible only because of the prayers, encouragement and financial gifts of Herald friends (Thank you, friends!). If you are not currently supporting this ministry in some way, I certainly want to invite your participation. Together with you, this ministry can encourage more people to prepare for the Lordís return!
