The Spirit Empowers the Church
 By R. S. McGrew

    The Church cannot be understood apart from Pentecost. This is the most important event in the Book of Acts. It was the one great act of which John the Baptist prophesied and Jesus Christ promised --the act of God in pouring out His Holy Spirit on the early disciples which purified their hearts by faith (Acts 15:8-9), and empowered them to carry on the great task to which Jesus had commissioned them. This is what makes a great church and a communicating church. Let this then be our prayer:

"Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire and lighten with celestial fire;
Thou the anointing Spirit art, who dost Thy seven-fold gifts impart.
Teach us to know the Father, Son, and Thee, of both to be but One;
That through the ages all along Thy praise may be our endless song!"
